I was under no obligation to blog about the movie and I knew I wouldn't unless it either offended me or blew me away. It sure didn't offend me. I loved it. Really, really loved it. I don't want to tell you too much about it because I am afraid I would make the movie not sound as good as it really is. You can check out the trailer, The Odd Life of Timothy Green to get an idea.
I will admit that my life experiences probably predisposed me to love this movie. I know what it is to be loved by parents I was not born to. I know what it is love a child not born to me as intensely as one who was. I know what it is to begin parenting a child rather than a baby. I know that not everyone gets or appreciates that a child not born to you can still be your own. So much of this movie I related to, yet I really wouldn't call it an adoption movie. In fact, Timothy wasn't adopted, he came from the garden (Oh, how I love the magic of the movies!) Rather it was a great family movie with a positive adoption message. Also, I had reserved seats right behind the press and that impressed Maddy and the boys and made me feel special. So, I will fully admit that I was in a great mood and expecting a good movie. I can't say for sure, but I think even apart from my adoption ties and my VIP treatment, I would have loved the movie. Had they given me free Diet Coke and popcorn I probably couldn't write this with a clear conscience but they didn't, so I can.
I know that most of the readers of this blog have a connection to adoption. I was really touched by "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" and want to know how other people (not just those in the adoption community) feel about it. Go see it. Let me know.

Thanks Alison! I had recently googled reviews of this movie to be sure it was appropriate to bring Katie to. We were anxious to see it, but even more so now that you gave it your "two thumbs up".

Karen, I (obviously) think you all will love it. I was next to Jemby during the movie and he kept squeezing my hand and smiling at me. It truly moved all of us (and that is saying a lot when it comes to the boys). Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

Thanks Alison, I'm so glad to hear your review because while it looks darling, I was concerned that it was going to have the topic addressed in some way that would just tork me off. We'll be headed out to view it too!
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear your thoughts on the movie!
DeleteThanks for taking the time to write.
Alison
Well I just burst into tears watching the trailer, so...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is just 3. Would she enjoy it? It looks like it might be a bit too old for her.
I think 3 might be too young to really appreciate the movie. However, I bet she will really love it when she is older.

I found your blog on the top list of Adoption blogs and it's been such a joy to read your story. Thank you for your transparency, I've been so encouraged. My husband and I are anxiously awaiting the day we are able to grow our family through adoption.---I was debating whether or not to see this movie and I think I'll definitely see it with your approval.

Thank you so much for commenting. It encourages me. I laughed when you thanked me for being transparent; my husband often asks my why I tell everyone everything! I will now tell him that people appreciate my transparency :)
DeleteIf you have a moment, let me know how you liked the movie.
Alison
Ha, transparency is what we all need! My husband is always asking "is this going to be on the blog"...
DeleteWe enjoyed the movie and had a fun date night! We went to see it the day after we found out a birth mother had chosen another family and passed us up :(. We went anticipating a much needed cry; however, a few tears here and there, and it was just a sweet little movie. Thanks for the recommendation.
I am sorry for your disappointment. Hugs to you.

After four years of infertility, and taking time to heal we have just decided to persue adoption. You and your blog are so inspiring. And my god, your family is absolutely gorgeous!! I've been wanting to see this movie, but was hesitant that it might rub me the wrong way (I was definitely bothered by the comment in the Avengers, too even though I did love the move!) Excited to go see this movie, this evening!!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that you have had to struggle with infertility and glad you have taken time to heal. I am glad you found my blog and that it has been helpful to you.
DeleteIt means a lot to me that you took the time to write to me.
Let me know how you like the movie!

That's a great family bonding moment, Alison! Although I'm not a fantasy-movie fan, I find that an inspirational one since it’s about love for children, whether they are adopted or not. I'm gonna watch that out and prepare lots of tissue boxes for that. =)
ReplyDeleteAlison,
ReplyDeleteJust checking in with your Blog, as I do from time to time, and needed to comment here... I just took my grand-daughter to see this last Friday ( now that I can see a movie on a weekday) and we both loved it! We came away feeling happy and that all was right with the world. I guess the love shown in the film does just that! I can see how Mikias and Jemberu both would be enthralled by this show too! They are both so happy and sweet...much like Timothy!
Hope that all is well with you and your family and that both boys have a great year this year!
